What is an electrodiagnostic study (EMG/NCS)?

It is two tests done together, and both measure the electrical signal of nerve. A nerve conduction study sends small electrical pulses through the skin to see how quickly and strongly a nerve carries a signal. An EMG uses a very fine needle, similar to acupuncture, to listen to the electrical activity the nerve and muscle. Between them they show whether a nerve is working properly, where the problem is, and how severe it is — issues that traditional imaging studies won't show.

What conditions does this test diagnose?
Carpal Tunnel SyndromeNumbness, tingling or aching in the hand and fingers, often caused by repetitive use.
Peripheral NeuropathyNumbness, burning or pins and needles in both feet or both hands at once.
Traumatic Nerve InjuryA direct injury to a nerve as a result of trauma.
Pinched NervesPain, numbness or weakness traveling down an arm or a leg which originates in the spinal cord nerves.
Cubital Tunnel SyndromeNumbness or tingling in the ring and little fingers, from pressure on the nerve at the elbow.
Muscle DisordersWeakness, cramping or wasting that starts in the muscle itself rather than in the nerve supplying it.
What can I expect on test day?

Plan for about 30 to 60 minutes. Small sticker electrodes are placed on your skin and brief electrical pulses are used to measure how well each nerve carries its signal — most people describe it as a quick tap or a twinge rather than pain. For the needle part, a very fine needle records the muscle's own electrical activity; it is not an injection, and no medication is given. You can eat normally beforehand, and drive yourself home and return to work afterwards.
